Fisherman's Trail — Complete Hiking Guide
The Fisherman's Trail is one of the most beautiful and celebrated coastal hikes in the world. Since its official opening in 2012, its reputation has grown steadily — and for good reason. This is one of those trails you have to walk at least once in a lifetime. Fair warning: once is rarely enough..
Part of the wider Rota Vicentina network — which also includes the Historical Way, dozens of Circular Routes and over 2,000 km of cycling trails — the Fisherman's Trail is undisputedly the jewel in the crown. It follows ancient coastal paths used by local fishermen for generations, connecting a scattered network of tracks along one of the most pristine, wild and rugged stretches of coastline in Europe: the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park.

The Classic: Porto Covo to Odeceixe
Let's be honest — this is mandatory. Every hiker who comes to the Rota Vicentina should walk from Porto Covo to Odeceixe at least once. If you repeat it in the opposite direction, it will settle into your heart all over again. The classic four days capture everything that makes this trail extraordinary: the wild Atlantic, the sea stacks, the cliff paths, the deserted beaches, the small fishing villages. There is no bad version of this hike.
💡 Some hikers start in Sines or S. Torpes. Keep in mind: the official Fisherman's Trail starts in S. Torpes. From Sines to S. Torpes there are no trail marks and the route follows busy main roads.
S. Torpes itself has no bus stop and offers limited services — the two local restaurants may or may not be open. If you want to start there, take a taxi from Sines and ask them to drop your luggage in Porto Covo. Vicentina Transfers does not collect in S. Torpes. You can book all your luggage transfers from Porto Covo onwards.

Odeceixe to Sagres
The trail turns south into the Algarve, climbing toward Cape St. Vincent — seventeen centuries of pilgrimage at the edge of Europe.

The Pilgrimage: Porto Covo to Sagres
The coast, the natural park, the trail — all bear the name Vicentina. And the story behind that name is quite remarkable.
This is a pilgrimage destination that has drawn travelers for centuries — and a powerful reason to extend your hike beyond Odeceixe for five more days.
If time is short, consider starting in Odeceixe or Aljezur and hiking south to the end of the world. For hikers who value history and spirituality, reaching Cape St. Vincent is as moving as arriving at Fisterra on the Camino de Santiago.

Born in Roman Hispania in the late third century, Saint Vincent of Saragossa was a Christian deacon martyred in Valencia in AD 304, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. His courage under torture became renowned throughout the Christian world and was later praised by Saint Augustine.
What happened next belongs to the realm where history and legend meet.
According to ancient tradition, Vincent's body was cast into the sea by the Romans but did not disappear beneath the waves. Instead, it drifted westward under the watch of two ravens that guarded it day and night. The body is said to have reached the dramatic headland on Europe's southwestern edge, the Promontorium Sacrum — the Sacred Cape of the Romans — today known as Cape St.Vincent. There, local Christians are believed to have buried the martyr on the windswept plateau above the Atlantic. For centuries, medieval chroniclers repeated the story of the two ravens that kept vigil over the saint's resting place.
In 1173, Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, ordered Saint Vincent's relics to be transferred by sea to Lisbon, the new capital of a new kingdom. According to tradition, the ravens accompanied the vessel along the coast to the River Tagus. The image of the boat and its two ravens later became the coat of arms of Lisbon, a symbol that the city still bears today.
Whether understood as history, faith or legend, Saint Vincent's story has shaped the identity of this coastline for more than seventeen centuries. When you travel through Sagres, Cape St. Vincent and the Rota Vicentina, you are crossing one of Europe's most evocative cultural landscapes — where Roman memory, medieval devotion and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

The hike returns to the original spirit of the Porto Covo > Odeceixe portion, with the trail following the contour of the cliffs in a dreamlike setting that crosses the beaches of Martinhal, Barranco, Ingrina, Zavial, Furnas, Figueira and finally, Salema.
SECTION 8
Salema > Luz
DISTANCE

Many hikers choose to combine the last two section of the trail into one day. If you have the time and want to make the most of it, there's no reason not to spend another day on the trail. The Natural Park ends at the fishing village of Burgau, which leads to Luz, where imposing cliffs announce the end of the journey and the return to the city.

The Complete Trail: Porto Covo to Lagos
If Porto Covo to Odeceixe is the crème de la crème of the Fisherman's Trail, the section from Sagres to Lagos is equally astonishing and equally demanding — the path presses closer to the cliffs, the terrain grows more technical and the scenery never lets up. Completing all three final stages from Sagres to Lagos makes the experience truly unforgettable. If you are only happy when you have walked it all, you will not miss them.
💡 Short on time? Local buses and taxis can bridge sections between Odeceixe and Carrapateira, or Sagres, letting you cherry-pick both ends of the trail without losing the highlights.
